It’s hard to imagine this odd clash of eras – this mix of androgyny and frou frou French Revolution femininity – working on anyone other than Cara Delevingne. The Chanel pre-spring 2013 collection borders comical on more than one occasion, if you were to view it as purely ready to wear fashion, but somehow the fantasy of it all – and its unusual pastel rainbow of 80s punk infusion – saves it from feeling like parody. Instead Karl Lagerfeld, both in his designs and his photography, casts a kind of magic in which Delevingne’s tomboyish charm is a key ingredient.
